Dear Parents/Guardians:

We welcome you to the 2018-2019 school year. We hope that you have enjoyed the summer months with your children thus far. The summer is coming to a close and we are looking forward to the opening of a successful school year. In order for us to ensure your child’s success, we want to make sure that you are aware of the following events, programs and procedures:

The first day of school is Wednesday, September 5, 2018, it is a half day. Thursday, September 6 th, and Friday, September 7, 2018 are half days as well. The first full day of school for all students at Village Charter School is Monday September 10, 2018. The school day begins at 8:05 A.M. and ends at 3:35 P.M. (Students may not arrive earlier than 7:30 A.M. as there will be no one to supervise them.)

Breakfast
NOTE: We will begin serving breakfast on the first full day of school-September 10, 2018. Breakfast begins at 7:30 A.M.

Arrival/Departure
Please DO NOT block the school’s entrance on Sullivan Way when dropping off and picking up your child/children. You may park in available spaces in all three parking lots. (Double parking on the street creates a tremendous safety hazard for all students and staff.) We will not allow students to cross the street to parked cars. You must walk or drive up to the designated parent pick-up areas.

Upon arrival, there are designated entrances that students and their parents/guardians are expected to use in the
morning:

  • Grades K-8 enters through the main doors at the front if the school.
No other entrances are to be used in the mornings.
  • Late students will enter through the front doors after 8:25 A.M. also.
(Please escort ALL late students into the building for sign-in.)
  • Students cannot be signed into school after 11:00 A.M. on full days, and 9:30 A.M. on half days.
At dismissal, there are designated exits that students who walk or are picked up are to use:
  • K-3 Parent pick-up students exit through the side door, and form grade group lines in front of building A.
  • 4-8 Parent pick-up students exit through the front doors, and form grade group lines at the main entrance of the school.
  • K-8 Bus students must wait in their assigned lines, inside the gym.
Bus students may leave the premises only by bus or with a parent/guardian.
  • K-8 Walkers exit through the front door.

NOTE1: All students will be escorted to their assigned lines in front of the school. Parents/Guardians please do not ask to wait inside the school lobby. Your presence in the hallway may also increase the congestion in the halls If your child has permission to walk home, please indicate that by sending a note to the office. A list will be given to the teachers.

NOTE 2: During inclement weather, students who are picked up by parents/guardian will be dismissed from the gym.
Parents must come inside to pick up their children.

Visitors
For the safety of our students and staff, ALL VISITORS MUST SIGN IN and remove all hats and sunglasses upon entering the building. Parents/guardians/designees (over age 18) will not be able to pick up students for early dismissal without proper identification. His or her name must appear on the emergency contact forms in the school’s offices. Students will not be released for early dismissal after 3:10 P.M. on full days and not after 12:35 P.M. on early dismissal days. Your cooperation is appreciated as we take every precaution to keep your child safe. This will be strictly enforced.

Forms and Documents
At the beginning of the school you will be receiving a number of forms and documents to complete, sign, and return. It is very important that you complete the documents and return them to school immediately. These forms are important and are mandated by the school. Failure to return required forms may affect your child’s lunch status, dismissal process, or participation in school activities.

Compact for Learning
You will be receiving a compact for learning. This compact is an agreement between you, your child, your child’s teacher and the school. It is important that you read this document with your child, sign the receipt, and return it to school. Inorder to have a successful and rewarding school year, we expect students to abide by the pledge set forth by the school. School Uniforms It is required by the Village Charter School that all students (K-8) wear the approved school uniform. A letter was sent to every parent/guardian this summer to inform you of our uniform policy. Please make sure that your child comes to school each day dressed in the appropriate school uniform, including appropriate size accessories.

NOTE: Students who are not in appropriate clothes must call a parent for a replacement. Further consequences will be given to students who continue to be noncompliant with the school’s uniform policy.

Cell Phones and Electronic Devices
We remind you that cell phones and electronic devices are not allowed in school. We understand that many students have cell phones in order to be accessible to their parents; however, they are not to be used during school. Phones are to be stored in lockers. If a student is seen with a phone, it will be confiscated and returned only to the parent/guardian.

Back to School Night
We look forward to your involvement in the activities and initiatives planned for this school year. We solicit your help in coming together in a collaborative manner to work with the teachers and staff to improve student achievement in our school. The scheduled date for our mandatory Back to School Night is Tuesday, September 25, 2018, from 6:30-8:00 P.M. Please mark the date and time on your calendar and plan to attend.

Regards,

Mrs. Wooten-Johnson
